At my side, where it says what kind of membership I have here at divebuddy, it sais None, and then there is a star. What does the star stands for? Does everyone without a membership have that? Why?

I to have been wandering about that! I guess we are like the Dr Zuess creatures that had "...a star upon thar’s".

I added the star so people can find the Membership option easier...I keep getting emails about how to upgrade. I guess it’s working :) It doesn’t mean anything other than that. If you have a membership, the star goes away.

Oh... I thought I was the one one having it, telling everyone that I am a special person.

If it disturbs people having it, because of history, maybe we can change it to something else. A smiley?

Keep the star Greg, you will never please everyone all the time. I don’t believe you were trying to be malicious by using a star… Keep it, better yet add 2 or 3 for that matter.

No offense is meant from the star. If enough people want me to change it, I will. This is your site. I’m just the guy behind the computer. And remember, please play nice on this site. We’re all cool people, lets treat every person and every one’s opinion with respect. Thanks!

Great, idea for star, it worked for me. I really had planned several times to help support the site, just seemed not to get around to it. Glad you added the google pay option, better then pay pal and safer.

Now that I did the life member deal, I can complain, just kidding. But next up grade you need to add a spell checker, and make your life members more like partners in a sence, to help promote and get businesses hooked in to this site. I recently had Scubatech sign up with you, as well as anne of the sea, gave a card thing I printed for her to the last 2 calasses of students she had. Maybe send out a few bumper stickers or magnets what ever you use, or something I can stick on scubatechs fill station water tank. They are it here in Destin the other shop is bad on service and more so are just a tourest trap, so this place is where the locals go.

I agree. We can not please everyone, so keep the star. It is up to everyone to understand things as we choose. History is history. This is a wonderful webpage. Thanks, Greg!

A Star? How new is it? I became a member without even noticing it. I definately love knowing I’m supporting the operations behind a great site, that I now surf more than MySpace. He He

Keep up the great work Greg and family!

I am not trying to be mean or any thing but I do have a few questions for Smitty. If seeing a star reminds you so much of the most horrific event of mans history, do you feel the same way when you see the American flag, or any American military mode of transportation or even the Star of David?

I dont know what your religious beliefs are, but I also wondered about your protest of the star and in your profile you quote a psalm from the Bible. Hmmm perhaps you are theoloically diverse (good for you if you are).

Honestly, however, you were a quite rude to Greg in the way you expressed your view. I dont know why you would be like that unless you are trying to get a rise out of people just to see how they would respond. As Greg always says, "be nice"

Greg,

Keep the star. As one veteran to another, we know what it means to see one hung in a window of a house and whether the star displayed means the difference between an anotation of one serving; or one that has given all.

Hopefully, the hypocrisy is noted by his own tattoo and ill words.

Good catch Righunter, malibu, Magdelena, FINSUPHAMMERDOWN, & scubadad.

From what I’ve seen and read, Smitty seems to be a cool, funny guy...I’m starting to think his reply was meant to start a good, heated discussion. If that was the intention, it worked and I thank him for it! Now many people know about the star on the member home page and will hopefully want to upgrade their divebuddy membership so I can afford a new pair of shoes for my kids! Thanks Smitty :)

I like the star greg and don’t chance it on my account. A starfish might be more aproperate, and then with different levels of membership award bigger fish, a shark being the highest level of membership.

FIRST OFF :greg you are welcome, it was not my intention to belittle you or this forum, but allow me to retort/clarify my posting. I am NOT repeat NOT offended by stars. it was the way the star was USED that concerned me. the use of a star to CLASSIFY ones STATUS as a member/non-member- is what evoked my response. the use of an emoticon with a frown would not have affected me. the use of the star FOR THIS PURPOSE ! was troubling to me on a personal level, had I known that voicing that concern would have have started such a tirade I would not have posted it!! HAVING SAID THAT, I would respond to my fellow divers with this, MALIBU- -YES i get upset when I see the stars on the american flag! when I see those stars being burned, urinated/depicated on!!-and very emotional when I see the star of david !! FINS UP: I am fully AWARE AND PROUD to have the star of david on my back BUT did you also notice the three crosses at the apex of each trident?? as far as the hypocrite statements are concerned?? Ill be nice...MAGDALENE: understand things AS WE CHOOSE?? HISTORY IS HISTORY? madam! those who forget HISTORY are doomed to REPEAT it !!! IT is not my intent to be malicious by this response, but I feel that a response was warranted!! SMITTY

Oh...sorry. I just re-read my post. I made a mistake and have to apologize to:

1) the atheists and agnostics who may not believe in or acknowledge "god":

2) the true believers who believe god should be spelled with a capital "G" ; and

3) those who believe in multiple gods. In which case I should’ve said "dear god(s)"

Point is, you’re gonna offend someone someway no matter what your intent is. I’m guessing Magdalena was sorry she ever asked the original question.

Have a nice day :)

Im a little confused. The only way we see a star is on our own personal profile, no one else can see it right? Like there is a star next to your name when you view it as a reminder, but no one else can see it as if it were signifying anything as a paying/no paying member?

Its just like the link on the top right to logout. Its their as a reminder, you dont have to use it if you dont want, just helps out. :o)

The star is only for people that haven’t upgraded their membership. If you have already upgraded your membership, I remove the star. It’s for a reminder and attention grabber only. The star is located on the member home page, next to the "Membership: None" link.

I am not talking about forgetting history, just about understanding the now without letting history run my thoughts.

For example, do you know that Hitlers symbol once was a symbol of love? Look at Hitlers symbol in a morror, and what you see is a buddhistic symbol for Love. Hitler just took it, ´made a small change and used it for hate. We have e temple here in Perth, Western Australia with 3 buddhas with that symbol on their chest. Beautiful!

I refuse to let history run my life. I am free to understad thing in a good way, I refuse to let hate win this world. People may use symbols the wrong way, but I am free to use the right. Hitler was using the star wrong, I can still use it right.

What would happen if someone took the heart and used it as a sybol of hate? Do we have to stop using the heart then, as a symbol of love? Would the heart become something ugly?

Even if Hitler did something bad with the star, I still think stars are beautiful. They have been there long before humans, lighting up the sky and showing the way home.

All this crap about the star and I missed it. The star is pretty, Hitler was an ass, and we all have fun with this site. Some history never changes. People that do the most bitching are the ones that want everything for free. If you don’t like the pretty star, I’m sure Greg can put a flag next to you name. Greg has done the greatest thing for all scuba kind and we should help him out. Good luck Greg-You’re the best and thank you very much.
