More than a year after the worst maritime disaster in modern California history, the U.S. Coast Guard said it would enact a sweeping series of rules and other reforms designed to make small passenger vessels safer.

The changes come in response to the 2019 Labor Day weekend fire aboard the Conception dive boat off the Channel Islands, which killed 34 people and exposed a series of serious flaws in boat safety later detailed by a series of Times reports and an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The Coast Guard told the NTSB this week that it was agreeing with seven recommendations for major changes, including mandatory checks to make sure roving watches are occurring, better smoke detector systems, mandatory safety management systems and improved emergency exits.

There are a lot of liveaboards with sketchy exits :( I remember one that was pitch black below so we hung a chemlume stick by the exit so we could find our way to the bathroom. 14 divers going up that ladder in a fire would have been another disaster :(

With the exception of the Nai’a I think everyone I’ve been on required you to exit past the camera and light charging area which is probably where the fire started.

The real problem is most liveaboards are not US registered so this USCG ruling will not affect most of the trips we do :(

I think something about a charging cabinet, or no charging at night, is going to be involved.

The last cruise ship that I was on would unplug any chargers you leave unattended. No unattended charging allowed.

I’ve decided to ditch my lights and cameras. Not many of my pics are any better than what’s already on the net. If I want to see a pic of a grouper, I can just google it. My luggage is lighter, and my diving is more fun now.

Live aboards should consider adding a high power charging cabinet complete with good chargers. That way people aren’t plugging in dozens of slow chargers all over the place. Just leave those at home.

8 of these permanently mounted in a SS cabinet on the top deck would have everyone charged fairly quickly, and safely.
