Sorting forum discussions

Is it possible to sort the forum discussions by the most recent post. That way, "active" discussions (and new discussions) would be on the first page. As the discussion dies off, the topic would naturally fall down the list.

As it is now, if folks just look at the first page, they may miss an "active" discussion.

I agree. The number one reason I don’t participate in many discussions here (and I’m a prolific poster on several other boards) is that it is too hard to keep track of what discussions I’m involved with and when there has been something new added.

I hear your comments and will answer them soon. I’m planning on adding another view to the forum section that will allow you to sort and see things in a more condensed manner. I also want to add a section to your forum topics that show the discussions you have participated in...not just the ones you’ve started.

Thanks for thinking and thanks for sharing your comments...I build this site for you! Greg.

What’s the reasoning for a custom designed forum engine when there are excellent full-featured products already out there like phpbulletin and vbulletin (used by scubaboard, decostop, spearboard, zendiver, and many other dive forums)? Phpbulletin is free open source and vbulletin is cheap, much cheaper than custom programming time.

From ReefHound: What’s the reasoning for a custom designed forum engine...

If I wanted DiveBuddy to be just like everyone else, I would use a free "off the shelf" product. Creating the code from scratch allows me to tailor the site for scuba divers and gives me the freedom to do anything I want with it. Since DiveBuddy is a true social network...a forum is just one piece of the whole package and it needs to integrate well with the rest of the site. Pre-canned forum sites are a dime a dozen.

Plus, I own all the intellectual property of the stuff I create :)

New forum views coming soon....

Ok, I just built the list view section which shows a spreadsheet like view of the forum posts. It shows all original posts (topics) and replies in date order (most recent first). You can sort by the columns AND search. You can page through all the results also.

Soon I’ll add the ability to see only the topics you’ve participated in AND the ability to subscribe to a forum topic so you get email notifications whenever someone posts a reply.

What else? Besides the standard forum features? Is there anything else you want to see OR a different way to see it?

Thanks for all your suggestions, Greg.

Ok, I just added the ability to subsribe to a forum. You can subscribe when you’re replying (by checking the check box) OR click the Subscribe link towards the top right when you’re viewing a forum topic. You only need to subscribe once to begin receiving updates whenever someone replys to the forum topic. Soon I’ll add a page to lets you manage your forum (and blog) subscriptions. Thanks!

how about an option to "unsubscribe" to forum discussions (that I start). Sometimes, I might not want a message notifying me of every reply.

A while back I added the ability to see your subscriptions and unsubscribe. You can find the link in the member home page in the "I Want To" drop down field OR under Edit Profile in the General list of links.
