 SSI Science of Diving Specialty

Has anyone else completed the online SSI Science of Diving Specialty? It was (is?) a free covid-19 quarantine promotion.

My local SSI store in NJ says they won’t honor SSI’s promotion because they don’t put their name on a c-card for a diver they don’t know. While this seems reasonable, it’s still kind of annoying. I guess I have to do another SSI specialty in person to convince an SSI shop to also approve a non-diving specialty I already earned.

I did it through a shop in Cozumel but they are no longer offering the class for free. I was able to do the course with $0 out of pocket. I know my local dive shop was offering it but you still had to pay $70.

I did it with a shop I never used but kinda knew the owner and got the virtual card. Unless you’re planning on becoming a professional through SSI, what good is the card itself? I was grateful to get the card but took the class with no expectations of getting it.

Agreed, the knowledge is the reward, and it was worth it... but it’d still be cool to get the card. I might actually be inclined to get dive guide with SSI at which point it’d be relevant. You never know.

In other news. It’s 97 in the shade here at blue grotto today and I’m in a 7mm.
The fully equipped walk from the parking lot down to the deck somehow never makes it into my daydreaming.

It was a good course. I hope you’re successful in getting the card. Maybe drop in to the shop to greet the owner and find out about their classes? Email SSI? Seems silly for them to do this when the whole thing is a promotion to get shops more business.

Is it still free? I googled it and all I can find is SSI’s general training page trying to determine my location and put me in touch with a shop for live training. I don’t see any link to a free online Science of Diving course.
