Punta Cana Diving Advice

We just scheduled a trip for the first week of April to Punta Cana in the DR. Will be our first ‘out of country’ dive other than St Lucia. That trip was through Sandals so not much to be concerned with. Would love any tips or advise from those who have any experience in this area. Thanks in advance.

Went to Punta Cana last year. The diving on the East shore is not so great, exposed to the Atlantic and is pretty rough with not a lot to see.
The best diving is on the South side, Catalina and Saona island and the Georges wreck. I highly recommend contacting Scuba Fun in Bavaro and getting set up with them. They will send a cab to your hotel and pick you up. The same cab will be waiting when you get back from dives to take you back to hotel. Great service and really nice folks. Did nitrox cert with them while there.

Punta Cana’s major dive sites are generally less than 50 feet deep and located 10 to 15 minutes boat ride from the beach.

We took RKDon’s advice and dove with Scuba Fun on an excursion to Saona Island. The 2 dive trip was perfect! Saw cuttlefish for the first time ever along with tons of beautiful fish and coral. The dive shop was very communicative and easy to set things up with. The crew was both educated and entertaining! Could not have picked a better situation! We only got to do one day of diving on our trip and I’m so glad we did what we did. Unfortunately, with all the current new stories relating to the DR, we won’t be going back any time soon. Want to send a big THANKS to RKDon for his great suggestion!!
