The Keys are getting back to normal and basically back open Oct 1. But check with any hotel or dive shop you want to use to be sure it’s okay. Upper Keys is best while Islamorada and below you will find problems for a while. Of course the Conch Republic (Key West) is waving a hand to come on down. There you would also find different stages of rehab. A word of caution, be extra supplied for your visit as you may find shortages of various things for a while.

I will be heading down but not sure when. We were planning on a trip around thanksgiving to the condo we use in Islamorada but the short term renters became longer term due to Irma. If they are out that is when we will go. I was thinking of earlier to stay at Marina Del Mar in Key Largo but my computer needed an upgrade and won’t get it back for a few weeks. So if it’s more towards November we will wait to see what’s up with condo, but either way we will go down between now and thanksgiving. Will post trip updates later.

You might also want to ask the dive op if they need anything you can bring.

I did get a message from Conch Republic that they were going out but last I heard their compressor was being powered by a genset.

Some other reports say the wrecks and reefs are good and if anything sand has been sucked out, there is even an anchor exposed at the Benwood now.

I haven’t been on he Benwood for a long time. There wasn’t much left so maybe more from under the sand is exposed. It is a very easy shallow dive that is normally done as the 2nd dive after a deep wreck. Always lots of nice fish on her. May have to check it out to see the changes.

It’s somewhat surprising, but the Benwood is fine post Irma. Key Largo only got Cat 1 winds, but given the shallow water of the Benwood you would think there would have been more movement. Some pieces of the wreck that are in the sand got moved around, but the bulk of the wreck is same same, maybe a bit deeper in the sandy areas, not a bad thing!

And yes, the Key Largo is very much back open, as well as the rest of the upper Keys...The lower Keys, while officially open, you should check before heading down to a perticular site, etc. The Keys needs support! Please make a reservation and go diving!
