 Great Barrier Reef AUS Diving - Questions

I am planning a trip down under (Australia) Dec 2016 - I would like to add to my bucket list diving the Great Barrier Reef, But online research is confusing. I am hoping to do 3 days of Diving, Is Cairns the best location? can anyone recommend some options, Dive shops etc? I am not into the Live-aboard as the Mrs is a none diver, and would prefer to keep her feet on hard ground.
