 Dive Computer upgrade vs keeping my old one??????

I have a Oceanic VEO250.....I have had it for years and it has always worked great? recently I was diving and at depts the screen went blank occasionally. After the dive I took it to a dive shop and thought it might be a battery. The battery icon showed full. The dive shop was more interested in selling me a new one because mine was old and there are so much better computers. They said without looking at it it was the computer. I went home and open it up . There was a little moisture in it so I cleaned it up put the battery in and everything worked good. But as I played with it the battery icon started flashing. I’m going to replace the battery and seal. So why should I upgrade? The VEO250 does nitrox, hasa dive planner, tracks nitrogen and O2 levels, remaining dive time. If I buy the program I can download logs to a laptop. and has alarm. It sets 15 ft 3 min safety stop and if needed will do deco. So I ask why should I upgrade? They are expensive! I will upgrade if a safety issue. I always have back up gauges and never dive alone. So what do you think?

If water got in there’s defiantly an issue. Can you trust it? Do you have an analog depth gauge? I guess as long as you plan your dive and dive your plan you should be fine. Also depends on what kind of diving your doing.

Dive shops may try to sell you a new computer. I think most of the dive shops are credible and want you to dive safely. Given the age of your computer it may be best that they recommend a new one, whether it is needed may be another issue. Since, you had the moisture issue inside the computer, it may have - at the least - initiated corrosive properties inside the unit. If the battery does, in fact need replacing, that’s probably the cheap fix. With the age of your computer, maybe it’s better to err in the name of safety. You certainly don’t want this to happen at depth on a dive in the future. It would also be good to check with the manufacturer, Oceanic, to see if they can problem solve your issues. Screen going blank, not good. Maybe it’s happened others in the past, and they may be able to fix it or recommend that you should, in fact, replace the computer. As always, safe diving!

I had a Veo that went blank, Oceanic themselves, not the LDS sent me a 250 no charge. I did have to cut a hole in the side of my console because the old Veo didn’t have a side button. It’s still my primary and I use a Cochran multi gas which cost a lot more as the back-up.

It wasn’t allot of water. It was more like moisture. So I cleaned it and I noticed as I kept playing with it the more I used it finally the battery light came on ......so I replaced the battery and its working good. i’m going to have it pressure tested just to be sure. There are two things I take on a dive. One is a buddy, and the other are mechanical gauges. The seal looked good but Im ordering a new one. (just in case) Thanks for the information. There are allot nicer computers but my VEO250 Does everything a recreational diver needs

Your wife will only spend the money on something you don’t need or want.

As per LATITUDE maybe oceanic will do a trade up, guess that’s worth a try

I have the Veo 180 works well enough for the diving I do. And an old hose mounted Uwatec as a backup.
