DiveBuddy.com has just launched the first "open source" dive site database on the Internet. "Open source" means that any member of DiveBuddy.com may add/edit a dive site.

http://www.divebuddy.com/divesites.aspx

Members are encouraged to manage the dive sites in their local area and all members are invited to upload photos and add comments of dive sites they’ve visited.

Before adding a dive site, please search for it to ensure it doesn’t already exist. If it does already exist, please contribute to the dive site profile by editing the information as you see fit and uploading your own photos or adding comments.

If a dive site that you are familiar with does not exist, please add it to our database. Enter as much information about the dive site as you can. The description field allows HTML code, so you can add more photos or videos there.

Make sure that your local dive sites have a default photo associated with it. The default photo is the one that shows up on the top right when viewing the dive site.

You can quickly view the dive sites in a particular State by adding "?State=XX" to the end of the url. For example, the following link will show all dive sites in California:

http://www.divebuddy.com/divesites.aspx?State=CA

When you are viewing a dive site that has a Map Location, you will see an ebmedded map on the page that shows the location with a blue dot. Members and dive retailers within a 50 mile radius of that location are also shown on the map. Members must have their location added to their own profile (Edit Profile > Personal) in order to show up on a dive site map. If you are logged in and you click on a member dot on the map, you will be able to send that member a quick message through DiveBuddy.com.

History is stored whenever a member makes a change to a dive site. That way, we can view who made the last change and possibly revert back to an old value if a mistake was made.

Here is a video tutorial I created that explains how to use the dive site section:
