My husband is an instructor. The dives must be done in the presence of an instructor. You also have to complete knowledge reviews.

That’s not necessarily true, I’m not sure what organization you are using; but SSI is different than the others on Advanced C-Card. SSI Advanced is a combination of 4 "specialty c-cards" and 24 logged dives. I’m under the understanding that obviously the original OW check out dives and 4 specialty dives must be under the instructors obviously but the other dives just need to be logged and signed by dive buddy and that’s acceptable.

I would suggest using your dive trip to get more dives under your belt before your AOW. Before you go see if you can speak to the instructor you’re going to do AOW with and see if they can tell you what AOW subjects you’ll do on the course. Armed with that list you can speak to the DMs that you will dive with and ask for pointers to improve. For example if you are going to do Peak Performance bouyancy on your AOW get the DMs to give you a few pointers on how to improve. The same with navigation. If you can practice that one while on your triup it will help on the class when you get home.

I would think doing your training dives with an instructor would be not only the smartest thing to do but the safest. I know you could go on dives not rated for the beginner diver but that doesn’t mean you can handle any circumstances that may occur. An instructor that’s there to inform you can enlighten you to all the possible hazards of a particular dive and can do them with you under a more controlled atmosphere. Don’t take a shortcut in your training. You may not only put yourself in danger but other divers that are with you.

Q. Do the logged dives can count towards the AOW cert?
A. For PADI, You need the OW cert dives, plus a selection of specialty dives (all with an instructor), plus you have to log 50 dives (the class dives included). I don’t believe all 50 have to be with any instructor.

The 50 logged Dives is for the Master Scuba Diver Certification. AOW is simply 3 Adventure Dives with an Instructor plus a Deep and Navigation Dive. Which would give you a total of 9 Dives... Additionally, you need 5 PADI Specialties. Not all PADI Specailities Have a dives associated with them. Equipment Specialist, Project AWARE Coral Reef Conservation, Project AWARE Specialist, and Enriched Air Diver are all Specialties that count toward Master Scuba Diver, which require no open water divers.
