We had one of these show up on a NJ dive in the 70’s. The site was the slabs off Beach Haven, divebuddy.com/divesite.aspx?DiveSiteID=4117 it was a wooden barge (retired sailing ship) with a load of bulding slabs heading toward NYC. It sank, rotted away and left the slabs all lined up like a kids toy, a capstan, a cook stove and what was probaby a boiler from a deck crane.

Some divers saw the fishs head and others on the other side of the wreck saw a tail which made it at least 20’ long. NJ viz being what it is no one saw both ends at once. Since Oar fish tend to swim vertical this one mush have been sick to be this shallow and horizonal under the slabs. I was having camera issues and didn’t get a photo. It wasn’t until years later when I saw a photo of one that I knew it was an Oar fish, we were thinking some kind of eel.

Oar fish are pretty slick.
