Puerto Rico Debt Crisis? Is now the time to move there?

With the unemployment in Puerto Rico over 15% and their current debt crisis unfolding, is now the time to move to Puerto Rico? Or does this data mean crime and corruption will rise soon?

Do you think PR will offer incentives for tech people with good jobs to move there?

From Greg: And WHY is the labor force participation rate in Puerto Rico so low??? How do the locals survive? multpl.com/puerto-rico-labor-force-participation-rate

I had a job offer from the USCG and almost moved there around 1990 but turned it down because I would have had a problem with my ex taking the kids that far from her but it would have been great for us as divers.

A couple of PR co-workers told me they actually liked the unemployment situation in that you worked for 6 months then got a 6 month vacation while a cousin did their job and they worked in the garden and traveled. One did retire from the Navy and move back to PR. He had been using his Navy pay to buy up homes and land in PR to rent out and now maintains them.

This is quite hard to explain as it requirs you to understand the culture of the island. As a Puerto Rican I understand it better...Before I go into details note that first
1. PR is a US territory
2. Residents born in the island are US citizens
3. PR Residents dont have representation in Congress - just a non-voting member
4. They cant vote for the president
5. They dont pay federal taxers
6. The are unincorpaorated territory
7. They are under Cabot laws - these require that cargo to the isalnd must be done on US flag ships, which are most expensive, and good are mostly taken to US land then to PR
8. All federal laws apply in the island - including minimum wage
9. Income per capita is $16,560 vs the Mississippi’s $31,186 ( a teacher earns 1,500 a month a polcie officer about 1,750.00)

For many years ( since the 1070’s) the Goverment lived beyond the means. Instead of cutting costs they borrowed to balance the budget. Now they cant borrow anymore and have to cut expenses.

Many are leaving the island as a rate to 30K a year, population in 2010 was 3.5 million, is estimated that in 2014 is about 3.1...

The Goverment is not efficient, they own most of the utilities companies except for Telephone and Wireless services. ( The Goverment owned the telephone Compnay but it was sold to GTE ( Now Verizon) who sold it to Claro a Mexican Enterprise)

There is more but I dont want to bore you w this...As a Puerto Rican I agree is a great place to visit.. Which I do every year to visit family ( I am heading there this week) but I wont leave there unless the Army send me...PM is you want more details

Gregg:

As now there is no incentives for tech people to move to PR. On the contrary Tech companies go to PR every year to recruit students out of college for their companies. We do have good College education and cheap ( I paid 65.00 per credit in 1997). My school , University of PR-Mayaguez -A Engineering School, I have a BSEE) According to Stateuniversity.com it ranked number 15 in 2012 amongst Public State Universities in the United States of America up two ranks from 2011. It is ranked number 1 in the Caribbean according to Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

Regarding CRIME ...is like any other place crime is isolated to some areas and more related to Drug traffic. Just like any Big City in the USA there are places you should not go if you dont have any business being there. Those areas are far from the main tourist areas and mainly in the San Juan area. The farther you get from San Juan the better it gets...My home town, Saban Grande PR ( norht of Guanica is 2 hours away from San Juan, had three years stright w no murders until this year. A police officer out of duty kill his ex-wife and her lover and then committed suicide...
Corruption is there, the main issue is that Goverment is the biggest employer, there is too many people for so little work....

How people survive in the island... WELLFARE...
