Grand Cayman Weekend for Open Water Certification?

Going out on a limb here...

I recently completed the academic and pool portion of the PADI certification course and have a vacation booked in early February, where I plan to complete the open water portion. But I wouldn’t mind doing the open water portion sooner if I could find someone to join me.

The school where I took my certification course offers weekend dive trips to Grand Cayman. The next trip is the weekend of December 13. Beginner certification is $425, including the hotel, and round-trip flights from the DC metro area are fairly inexpensive.

As an alternative, I’d be down to take a weekend trip to Florida or any other warmer climate if you have any suggestions.

A weekend ? Do all of the required dives in one day because the next you can’t dive and fly, Seems a bit rushed to me for a leisure sport.

I’d never go anywhere to dive for less than a week.

I agree 100% and Its recommended to Not dive 24 hours After arriving on a plane. I’m assuming that youve done the classwork so far? which Diving and flying should have been covered

Sorry, I created some confusion by using the term "weekend"loosely. The trip itinerary goes something like: (a) fly into Grand Cayman Thursday night; (b) 2 dives Friday; (c) 2 dives Saturday morning and a night dive Saturday night, (d) if you want to go for AOW, you can do additional dives on Sunday morning, (e) leave Monday, 24 hrs after your last dive on Sunday.

I know that you could get it done the weekend on December 14th & 15th in Florida for 399.00 includes all dives and hotel. Confined water and open water dives would be done at Devil’s Den. If you want more info, message me. Regardless, congrats on your move to become a diver!

There’s a NYC dive club/CT dive shop (OceanBlue) that does something like that calling it a "dive-n-dash", I never did any with them because I like to stay awhile :)

Thanks bostpa. I’ve already done confined water - what would be the cost just for open water?

LatitudeAdjustment - I don’t view "dive-n-dash" as ideal. My thought process is, I’m going to be in the Maldives for a week in February and I think it would be great if I could get my open water certification out of the way first so I can spend more time just enjoying my dives. Otherwise, no big deal, I’ll just do my open water cert in the Maldives :)

JDJDSJDS,

Do you have your confined water dives signed off on by a PADI instructor? If so, then your work to certify you should be a synch. Please PM me if you are interested and I will share the info on who to call. I am really not hear to peddle certs but would like to see you get it done so you can go play safely!

All - Thanks for your input. Some personal stuff interfered with my ability to get open-water certified before my upcoming vacation. But I’ll be in the Maldives in a little over 2 weeks and will complete my open-water portion there. Thinking of also doing advanced open water while I’m at it.
