Dive Log Comment Length Monitor

Hi Greg. How about a word counter that reports length of dive log comments when the 1000-word limit is exceeded?

A dynamic counter that increments up as you type would be even better!

I went over the limit and have no idea if I need to prune aggressively or just here and there...

MS Word says this comment is 989 words. I’m still getting the "...must be less than 1,000 words." error message.

=========================

Steps at bottom are very slippery with algal growth. Did a decidedly un-graceful entry as I slipped on the second submerged step. Somehow landed in the water clear of the hard surfaces. Be careful.
Nice swim up the river. More water life on the drift down to second entry. An adolescent manatee insisted on snuggling up into our chests as we snorkled up to the spring vent. Steady SCUBA traffic. Vis suffered from divers scraping fins against the rock, dislodging algae and scum. Some crowding at the mouth where divers stacked up, waiting to go down into the vent. Several times, there was no dive route for a freedive with everyone milling aboutno need to crowd the vent like that. My buddy shot sideways to avoid being kicked on ascent and cracked his face pretty good on a rock ledge.
Not a beginner dive. Cavern mouth around 20ft can be very intimidating. Large fallen trees block the entrance; you have to thread your way between them
ALL IN ALL, GREAT DIVE TODAY.

The comment length includes the html code that you don’t see in the description field. I’ll consider increasing the length of that field. For now, try to chop off some more. Use abbreviations :)

I just increased the comment length to 1800 characters.

Yeah, man, I hacked the original mercilessly to get it down to where I did! Thanks for opening up the limit.

The bummer is not knowing how far over you’ve gone and having to go back and edit/prune on a trial-and error basis. Being able to track the length dynamically would allow members to post richer comments. Seems likely that some have just gotten into the habit of ultra-short comments to avoid the cap.

Can you put a word counter on your development list?

I’ve thought of that. I will consider some JavaScript to do this.
