Wondering if anyone has suggestions for questions to ask when diving with a buddy for the first time?

I generally just try to observe as people will say the things that make them appear more than they are...
You might want to ask, "How many dives in this type of dive site have you done?" Asking how long have you been diving will not help. Someone who has "been diving since the ’80’s" who has only made a total of 20 dives may not be what you want near you in the water...

I always assume (and I’m fully equipped) that I’m diving solo even if there is a "buddy" there - particularly if it’s someone I haven’t dove with before. I might try to get a feel through general chat but many people exagerate their experience or have a elevated opinion of their skill level. I make sure to make clear procedure if they experience OOA and establish a general dive plan and who will lead. Other than that I can tell more about their diving in the first five minutes UW by careful observation than any amount of questioning.

Here is a good article on the subject:

You can also search for "good dive buddy" in the search field at the top to see more.

TREDS, I like it.  You could also make it THREDS.  The H stands for "Hottness of buddy" :)

Opps, I just realized I might get in trouble with badintexas with this one.
