Aloha! I’m heading to the big island to explore and want to do some dives. I have never dove tropical as I’m from the pacific northwest. The conditions here are pretty bad compared to there so I feel pretty competent. Ive had a few classes and just got rescue diver certified. I have about 30 real dives under my belt. I will be staying on the big island as long as I can afford, then heading to Maui to explore. I am deciding if I want to move there and will move to the place that has the best diving/hiking, and of course jobs. I have all my own gear except tanks. I am very interested in some night diving as well. Bring on the turtles and reefs! Maybe be lucky enough to see some larger marine mammals or sharks. Mahalo, and have a great day! -Elizabeth

Elizabeth, I went to the Big Island and Maui this past November...check out the blog I worte on my profile (it’s the only blog I have, so it should be easy to find) and it’ll give you some information as far as dive sites I visited, operators, etc. (even some pictures I snapped while there). Hawaii is beautiful, extremely espensive (like $9 for a gallon of milk expensive...and that’s at the regular grocery store) enjoy your time there and if you’d like any additional information (like places I stood, places I hiked, etc...items not found in my blog) feel free to message me. Mahalo!

Hello Elizabeth, I’ve never been to the Big Island but have been to Maui quite a few times. There a a lot of great shore dives on Maui, One that I did just recently is the Mala Wharf just outside of Lahaina on the north side. It is an old concrete pier that was knocked down in a storm quite a few years ago. it is an easy entry off the rocks right by a boat ramp. There is lots of structure and exciting marine life including Turtles and Sharks. Don’t miss it!

The big island is on my bucket list to do the night Manta feeding. So I’m jealous. I have been to Maui several times. I did only one shore dive, at Black Rock at the Sheraton in Kaanapali. It was ok, nothing special, a few sleeping turtles in caves. The boat dives to not miss would be the Cathedrals on the Island of Lanai and probably Molokini (either inside for calm or drift dive on the backside for more advanced). I used Lahaina Divers both times and had great experiences. They go out every day and you can see where to on their website. Kinda pricey with any dive charter, but worth it for vacation right? And with a charter you don’t need a buddy as they will pair you up with another diver or you can follow the DM/guide. Too bad your trip isn’t a couple months later as I will be in Maui July 14-20, and then Kaui the week after. Have fun!

looks like we missed each other..... if you are on Hawaii the 5th...I could do an afternoon dive and the 6th, I could do a dive....
