They should spend a bit more money and build a port that has a lower impact on the seabed. Fewer columns in the water, more structural support above the water. I’m sure there are plenty of engineers out there that would love the chance to design a port that increases sea life rather than destroys it. And I hope they put very tight restrictions on what can be dumped into the water around the port.

I’ve been following this story on another board. I like the part where the developer claims the two dive sites in the direct path of the channel were not there until he proposed this. They were buoyed in 2002!
In addition to digging up the reef which will silt out the rest of the dive sites it will destroy 56 acres of woodland.
There is nothing good about this proposal

Get enough publicity on this and the threat to dive tourism may give the Caymanien government pause to think.

Horrible. I just dove the east end of Grand Cayman back in April. I love the place it was my second time there andI am currently planning a trip there June 2012. I chose the east end BECAUSE there is NO commercial things. Its quiets just like I like my Vacations, if I want the big ships and ports I would stay in 7 mile beach. Is there anyway to set up a petition to mail to the Cayman government to let them know how we feel? I know their livelyhood is built on tourism but this is going to kill it.

Yep, this battle has been going on for years. A similar situation happened in Playa del Carmen Mexico. Cruise ships wanted a dock at Playa - basically on top of one of the best reef on the coast. Fortunately, they lost and the developer ended up in prison. They built the dock but never got the chance to dredge. I have been to Cayman - it is a beautiful spot. Hopefully, this will not happen - it’s all about the money!

I just got back from diving the East end of Grand Cayman. Best vacation ever. I just found this thread. Has anyone anymore info on this? I too would like to do something to keep development from happening on the East end, that would just be stupid!
