Has anyone been diving while on a cruise?

Question is: did you take your own gear on the cruise?

Yes. I took my own gear too.It cost about the same because of the cost of a extra case on the air plane. But you can get some bad gear when renting.

I only took mask, fins and snorkel. I rented the rest at the places we were diving.. Really, no sense lugging all the heavy stuff around on a cruise.. If I was staying somewhere for a week, I would take my own, but a quick 2 hour dive at a cruise ship stop, I take only what I listed above..

I haven’t gone diving on a cruise, but know people who have. What they strongly recommended to me if I went on a cruise and wanted to dive, make your diving arrangements through the cruise ship concierge and not a local dive shop.

If you make arrangements through local lds, you’re responsible for getting to and from dive shop, and if your late getting back, the boat sails without you. And you have to make arrangements to get back to the ship on your own, which could mean paying for a flight to your next port of call and paying for a hotel room to spend the night in.

If you make arrangements through cruise ship, they will get you back and forth and will wait for you if you’re late.

thanks, Kathy, will let you know. I did book all dives through the cruise, so am getting to dive in the Grand Turks, St. Thomas and a private island in the Bahamas.

Actually, that dpends on the Operator.. When I dove in Nassau with Stuart Cove, I booked directly with S/C.. I saved about 50 dollars on a two tank and they still picked me up with the rest of the people from the ship. At CocoCay, since it’s Royal Carribean’s Island, you had to book with Sea Trek to dive there.. St. Maarten, booked through the cruise liner, but, in St Thomas, booked with LDS and saved some money again.. As long as it’s a operator the cruise line works with, they will still pick you up when they pick up the people that paid extra to book through the cruiseline.. Just double check with them when you book. It’s the Dive Operators that transport you to the dive shop, not the cruiseline.

Just got back in August from diving on a cruise, took my own gear. I booked through local dive shops and the cruiseline. Where are you going?

I always take my regs, mask, and dive skin, it will fit in your carry on.

Last year I dove in Cozumel while on a cruise. I took my mask/snorkel, but used rental gear due to air travel costs. The rental gear wasn’t the best, but did the job. Great diving!
