Myrtle Beach diving

I was curious if anyone has any plans to go to Myrtle Beach in the near future? If so, I was wondering if I could possibly tag along? I haven’t made it to the ocean yet and am still technically not considered advanced so I would like to keep it simple in the beginning. Anyway, thanks in advance!! Valerie

Val,

What all is out that way? I wouldn’t mind getting to Wilmington again before the cold comes in. Heading to Morehead City next week, so I will have to see.

You should try to head down to West Palm. It’s not to far, for that almost Caribbean feeling. Plus it offers a lot of great diving for that not yet advanced diver. :-)

I’ve lived in South Carolina pretty much my entire life but I don’t know what kind of diving is off the coast here. I emailed a charter in Murrell’s Inlet and the guy was talking about novice and advanced dives of 90 feet and 140 feet. 90 feet seems a bit steep for someone who has never been in the ocean before. Then again, I could be wrong.

I’m really game for anywhere, truth be told. I just want to try the ocean.

Valerie,

Follow your first instinct, 90 feet is too deep for someone that hasn’t been in the ocean before, currents and probably average vis, boat diving is different from quarry diving. I’ll talk to Gary (nitrojunkie) this weekend. He lives in Myrtle and should be able to give some good ideas for some 40-60ft stuff to get you started. He is bringing 5 others from that area, amybe I can arrange a tour!! For a nominal fee ;-)

Sounds awesome! You know I’ll be eternally grateful. I’d very much like to get in the ocean sometime before it gets too cold and before I head to Cozumel next year. Not that I’m complaining or anything!!

Val,
I agree with Dan. Diving on the Carolina Coast is Great and Beautiful but normally it is considered advanced due to some of the depths, currents and quick changing conditions.

You could also, which I think was mentioned, pay to have a dive master go with you. That way you could get that experience and maybe even have them sign your log.

Other than that, if you want to get some ocean dives and get that experience, head a little south. Unlike the Carolina Coast, most dives in West Palm are just a short boat ride from the dock.

Either way, I am not dissing the Carolina Coast, I have a high number of dives there and it has some diving that no other place in the world can offer.

Val,

Let us know how you like it, and where the best place to dive is. Roxanne and I are going to try to get down there this winter.

Val, If you’ll get up toward Little River in North Myrtle there are several reefs and wrecks that are in 35-60’ of water. I ussually go out from Holden Beach, but I’ve got my boat in Va else I would be glad to take ya. Try North Myrtle, Calabash, or even the south Brunswick Islands.

I may chicken out until next Summer. I haven’t heard anybody say that it’s relatively easy diving and definitely not something I want to try as an ocean newbie.

Thanks for all the tips! I really do appreciate them.
