I suggest diving in the comal river up in new braunfels. It’s only 13ft deep at best but there are lots of things to see...

I am familiar with several dive spots in Lake Travis in Austin. The most popular dive spot is Windy Point Park. http://www.windypointpark.com/scuba.asp Mansfield dam is shore accessible as well. Some great spots that accessible by boat would be; Starnes Island, Oasis Wall and Shaker Plant.
There are a few other places between Austin and San Antonio that scuba divers frequent but I personally have not been. Links can be found on Oak Hill Scuba’s website: http://ohsdiveteam.com/?page_id=54
If you need any equipment or tanks, the dive shop I use is in Oak Hill called Oak Hill Scuba, 6156 U.S. 290, Austin, TX 78735 (512) 892-4900, located about 20 minutes south of Lake Travis, open M-F 10-6 Sat 9-6.
Hope this helps, Greg

The comal is great! I dove it for the first time recently on 10/11, and and the viz was 10-15ft, 73F, 12ft max. Lots of big bass and one giant blue catfish.
As far as Austin goes, I highly recommend lake Travis scuba on the giant stride dive boat.

I might be able to dive Travis on the 15th.

For some reason this did not post correctly. Thanks for all of the great information. I will call Lake Travis Scuba in the morning and try for the 16th since they show no boat dives on the 15th.

From various pictures of Lake Travis diving, everyone seems to either be wearing a drysuit or 7mil (or greater) wetsuit. How cold is the water in November? I would assume that the Comal river is much warmer. The reason for asking is that I will be limited on luggage space (carry-on bag) with a 3mil wetsuit. I guess I could always rent a warmer wetsuit.
Thanks again.

The current surface water temperature in Lake Travis is 74 where the average temperature around this time is between 68-70. The thermocline is around 30’ and I would not recommend staying below the thermocline for any period of time with a 3mm. The Comal River is 72 degrees year round. I dive in Travis May through October with only a 3mm. I plan on diving this weekend so I will comment again about my experience on Monday.

I dove lake Travis yesterday 11/3 on the giant stride w/ lake Travis scuba. We did 2 dives:
Fiesta Haus/oasis wall 80 feet, bottom temp 63F, viz 4~ feet Found the grotto at 32 feet, large opening with air pockets
Starnes island 40 feet, bottom temp 68, viz 2-4~ feet Lots of barrels, random objects, sunken sailboat at 12 ft.
Overall fun time and I can’t wait to dive LT again.

Thanks for all of the great information.
I talked to Duggan Diving and they are doing a Comal river dive on 11/16 for new divers but said I could tag along. That may be best for me since I am trying a new travel BC and didn’t want to go very deep.
Thanks again for all the help.

I picked up my tanks yesterday at Duggan Diving. They had told me on the phone that they had a group going out on Sat but according to the lady at counter that may not happen. I am going to the F1 race today but would like to dive the Comal river tomorrow. Tanks are due by 6P. If anyone is interested in diving tomorrow, please let me know.
Thanks. Dayglo
