I’ve done quite a lot of diving in Puerto Rico. My two favorite areas are the north east (Fajardo, Culebra, and Vieques) and the south west (Guanica.)
Here are two articles I wrote a few years back about each:
Diving in Fajardo
Diving in Guanica
If you like wall diving, Copa Marina was a great place to stay, and they only required two divers to schedule a boat trip. If you want a bit more diversity, go to Fajardo and you can head out to Culebra, Vieques, and even St. Thomas. I stayed at El Conquistador there and they have a dive shop as well.

I would suggest as a start by reading this book "The Complete Diving Guide The Caribbean" Volume three by Colleen Ryan and Brian Savage. htis volume covers PR, US VI and BVI. You can get the PR ( Including the Spanish Virgin island - Vieques and Culebra) only chapters in Kindle version from Amazon or in PDF version from the vendor at www.caribdiveguide.com . Eventhough this book was published in 1998 it will be a great start to undestand diving in PR. (Some info in outdated but as I said is a great start) If you decide to dive on the west coast of the island be aware that you dont need to fly to San Juan International. There are two additional Intl Aiports you can fly to which are closer to that side of the island. One is in Aguadilla, PR (Code : BQN) , Jet Blue and Spirit both have direct flight there. Also you have the Ponce Mercedita Airport (PSE) where Jet Blue flyes to. Both Airport are small and easy to access and not crowded at all.(Flight are late departure flights meaning you live close to midnight and arrive to the island in the early AM) I have flown to both locations so I am sepaking out experience. Both Airports locations have major Rental Car Companies... As for Lodging I will look in tripadvisor as they show you many of the lodging accommodations around the island. As mentioned before La Parguera is a great site, I am from Sabana Grande PR which is about 13 miles aprox from La Parguera. So I know the Parguera area very well. I am heading there to visit family late Feb’13. I will be also visiting Culebra so I can gather information for anyone in this forum. I will be diving the Parguera Wall (weather permiting) In addition, there are diving sites of the coast of Mayaguez. (I will be diving those also) A good friend of mine and owner of DiveShop_PR has a diving operation in that area with sites about 20 minutes boat ride. The Dive Shop Puerto Rico
Here there are other Dive Operators in the West Side of the island:
Paradise Scuba - La Parguera , Lajas PR - http://www.paradisescubasnorkelingpr.com/
Island Scuba - Guanica, PR - http://sanjuandiver.com/
West Divers - La Parguera, Lajas, PR - http://www.westdiverspr.com/html/mainpage.html
Taino Divers - Rincon, PR - http://www.tainodivers.com/SCUBA_DIVING_PUERTO_RICO/WELCOME.html
Aquatica Dive and Surf , Aguadilla, PR - http://premium.caribe.net/~aquatica/AUAWEB2/

Hope this help you. If you need more information about my island please do not hesitate to ask me.
Thanks

Darcyw:
My pleasure!! ( Excuse my gramar please!!!) Please fell free to ask any question related to PR. If I do not know the answer I can find someone that does. I am Puerto Rican and even though I do not live in my beautiful island anymore I go back yearly. I am heading there at the end of this month and I will post more information and pictures on my return...
Thanks!

Gino,
The wife and I are heading to PR for a week in March. We are looking to keep costs down, so with that being said, looking for best places for Shore Diving. We are for sure heading down to La Parguera for some Wall diving (charter) and was hoping for some decent shore diving there as well in hopes of not having to drive all over the island. Your input on shore diving would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael

Another Items about PR that could help you in planning your trip!!
1. A new law just went into effect 1 Jan’13. You must have a hands free device if using a cell phone while driving. If they see you talking on a cell while driving you will get a ticket.
2. PR roads are marked in kilometers not miles, so when you see distances on the signs you either need to change your GPS to km or remember to convert mentally from Km to miles.
3. Speed limits signs are in MPH....Yes confusing...
4. Gas is sold in liters not gallons, so when you hit the gas stations remember to multiply by 3.8 if you want to know how many dollars per gallon you are paying. When paying for Gas you might have to step out and pay inside as I’ve not seen many places you can pay in pump down there.
Though you would like to know these things before heading to PR!!!
