I use the metal rattle. Just keep it in hand incase you need it.

I have a safe-secondary (integrated octo) which also has a device known as a sub-duck (qwacker) (underwater noisemaker)built in. The device is available as an add on to a standard power inflator or integrated octo but having it integrated is real handy and doesn’t add any substancial weight or mass to the integrated octo. Basically it’s just another button to press. Some people complain that in itself is a bit confusing but with some use it becomes muscle memory for the inflate and deflate and for the once in a while you need the noise maker the button is already in hand and easy enough to find.

Hey Rich,Before I ask you to go diving with me may I ask how would you get my attention with a spear gun. Here in Australia we cannot legally carry a spear gun whilst on scuba. Obviously different in the States.
I also use a rattle.

Ken,
I’m thinking Rich was joking about the spear gun although I love it as an answer. :-)
I’ve used tank bangers and they work fine; Also many dive knives have a metal bar protruding about 1/8" out of the top of the handle you can use to bang on your tank with as well.

" I recently descended with a woman that used her hands to pull herself forward in silt to get moving forward then really blacked things out when she started finning. " I’ve taken pictures of that kind of behavior, divers picking up things in no touch areas, divers harrassing the wildlife.....Hmmm, wonder why I’m usually diving solo :(

I met a diver that carried a short aluminum rod, only about 1/4" round and under 20" long with a landyard attached. She explained that she used it to poke lobsters for picking, pointing out objects and sea life to other divers, and it functioned well to easily reach back and tap her tank to signel other divers. I guess you could just as well have SWAT that woman you were trying to get control of.
