I’m not a diver (but Becky, Greg’s wife) but I can’t wait to see the responses. Sounds like a very interesting question! PS. Hope you win the bet!

A broken fin strap is the most likely in my opinion.
A mask strap could be as bad but many divers dive with a spare mask.

Not being able to breath underwater, so any problems in that are; or problems with the BC, e.g. suspected air leak, etc. like my instructor said, any other problems is just a nuisance.

2 things that Have happened to me, before entering the water,,,,,,,,,, Forgot weight belt. Free flowing reg

I have four identical tanks - picked up the two I thought were the full ones for a recovery dive 65 miles away to discover I picked up my empty ones ! I have since learned to cap the full ones and check with a psi guage before I head out. (never did find the boat motor anyway) .

I would have to say BC. As previously noted, with "most" items there is normally a spare from someone around. BC’s seem to be the one thing that there isn’t a spare of. Even had a spare reg once when mine wasn’t working properly. Weight seems to be around to some degree, even left a tank (during a two tank dive) on shore but was able to dive the second dive anyway due to an extra on board. My vote would be the BC

Its happen last weekend on shore dive my wife use new wetsuit 7mm and we have not enough weight to finish the dive. Water was to cold to dive with long jenny only.

Free flowing 2nd stage, but tank orings is the most common for me. Ok besides forgetting bc once, reg set 2 times, and boots. BCD was only one I had to go back for, and even after returning to dive site then my buddy had a air link problem, so never did dive that day.

Bad tank valve or "o" ring. 2nd choice - forgotten mask.

Any air problems are an aborted dive in our circle of divers. We can and have made dives without just about any thing but air. Self Contained Underwater BREATHING Apparatus. You can dive without anything but air.

There’s only one component that isn’t a "part" that can screw up a perfectly planned dive.... The final mental checklist of your own gear! Was diving a dry suit and got interrupted by a gabby neighbor as I was getting gear on for a dive off a dock. Just as I took the big step off the end of the dock I started to check off the items I always mentally check off prior to "committing" to the dive. As my fin hit the water I got to "dry suit zipper" on my check list..... Needless to say that my and my "buddies" Buddy Check skills got some quick remedial training. If interrupted doing your equipment check, start from scratch. The time to do your checklist is PRIOR to the LAST item that should be "Commence Dive".
