I’m going to have to go with LA on this one. Doesn’t look like any brain coral I’ve ever seen, looks more like a sponge. Picture isn’t too clear. Sponges are animals and they grow. Similar to coral. They won’t reach out and get you.

Ok, I’ll go out on a limb here. The surface appears to be fairly thin by looking at the holes. I’ll say it is the body of a long since deceased urchin. The spines have either fallen off after death or were eaten off, causing death.
