terrorism

Apparently the FBI is going to dive shops, warning them to be on the lookout for terrorists. The theory is they could take out a cruise ship with explosives. News said they are looking at those interested in closed circuit diving, particularly looking for training in murky waters, combat swimming and purchasing expensive technical equipment. Crazy, isn`t it?

I`m offended by the news agencies giving so much time to stories like that. As if the people who would wish us ill will need any more ideas. I sat here the other day watching Foxnews, and they were talking about all the potiential targets, etc. Gee with the dumb ones out there as evidenced by the foiled bombings in UK they obviously need ideas. I say just quietly warn businesses like dive shops and leave it like that. No need to make such a fuss over it. Just my 2 cents worth.

I am not saying divers are immune to terroist threats, but just when you thought it was safe to back into the water... I just mean, the water should at least be the ONE place we are safe...dontcha think?

Just read Greg`s Associated Press link, and NOW I am pissed. Why are they now going to attempt to give divers a bad name? I know we are cool and all, but why use that approach now for bombing? Can`t they be originaL/ What is next? Disguised as a WalMart Greeter? Skateboarder bombers? iPhone bombers? I mean really!!! I want to enjoy diving, NOT be interrogated for 5 hours BEFORE I can dive...in case I am a terroist!!!!!

You might be interogated when you go to sign up for your limited viz, trimix, and tech diving certs all at the same time.. :) So just keep it simple..

The media does more to hurt the security of the US and deployed troops than any other organization. To advertise or identify weaknesses in US security should be a criminal act. That being said I believe the government does not need to interrogate people who provide or seek advanced dive training. As September 11th illustrated, these knuckleheads don’t need high speed training, just enough to get by. But if they need to investigate they should do it quietly so as not to impose on the rights of US citizens and, more importantly, not to disclose the object of the investigation.

I just flash my military ID and give them the old Jedi mind trick.... "You don`t need to ask me any questions!"

Works every time! :)

Yeah, it *sounds* stupid, but a buddy of mine is an engineer for NJ Transit who was working the Atlantic City Line late at night (approx 1:30) last summer. Headed toward Atlantic City, he noticed a flash and some movement in the meadowlands/swamps near the city. When he looked again, he saw someone coming out of the swamp, fully kitted out in scuba gear. He called it in to the dispatchers who contacted the police. Turns out the guy was an Iraqi national "checking out" the main water supply feeds into Atlantic City. The ONLY thing that printed in the papers in the following days was that a trespasser had been arrested late at night on NJ Transit property.

Sorry, see post above. Should`ve been "former Iraqi national", now a resident of these United States of America.
