The Balaena is the remains of a wood hulled sailing vessel sitting upright in 160 feet of water, some others say 153’>170’. Although her bell, bearing the name Balaena, was recovered, no one, to the best of my knowledge, has been able to trace down the history of this vessel or find any reported sinking linked to a ship with this name. Gary Gentile reports in his book SHIPWRECKS OF NEW JERSEY that the Balaena could have possibly been a whaling bark built in 1818. Whatever she was, this wreck is well known to experienced deep divers for the abundance of dead eyes that have been recovered, from her. According to Pete Guglieri, depth of water at the wrecks deck is 160 feet. It is loaded with coal that still covers the wreck today.
