MV Nizzan was a trawler that was sank for the purpose of becoming an artificial reef and a diving site. She was sank on the 8th of April 2012 off the Achziv coast at 26 m. depth. The Nizzan is one of few wrecks that allows penetration dives to recreational divers. The Nizzan was one of eight trawlers given by the West German government to Israel as part of the Holocaust compensation agreement, from the 1950’s.
In 1956 the Nizzan and her “sisters” were drafted to serve as coastal patrol boats for the Israeli navy. In 1960 she sailed around Africa to trawl for fish in Eritrean Red Sea. The Nizzan sailed back to the Haifa through the Suez Canal in 1974 under a Greek flag. The Nizzan was engaged in commercial fishing until she was decommissioned in 2010.
