The 2.3-square-kilometre lake is located about 4 kilometres east of the village of Bjerkvik

During WWII and the Battle of Norway this frozen lake was used by the Germans as an airfield, there are photos on the web of 3 engine Junker 52’s sitting on the ice. The wreck of a German fighter plane (?) in Lake Hartvikvannet is a Junker 52 that is fairly intact. It was probably awaiting repairs when the spring thaw came and went thru the ice.
