Frio River- Garner State Park / Magers’ River Camp - Concan TX

Loading...
Frio River- Garner State Park / Magers’ River Camp is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located in Concan, TX 78838. This dive site has an average rating of 4.00 out of 5 from 2 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 11-15ft/3-5m. The average visibility is 21-25ft/6-8m.

The Frio River flows from Real (pronounced Ree-All) County into Uvalde County and continues on south. The Frio River around Concan, Texas is popular to summer vacationers for tubing and swimming.

There are two "holes" deep enough for a dive which are found between Yeargan’s River Bend and Happy Hollow, and the second is between Garner State Park dam and Magers’ Crossing.

Access to the dive site comes from Garner State Park (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/garner/) below the dam or Magers’ River Camp (830-232-5442) which is located on CR 350.

The dive site itself offers excellent visibility, an easy drift which you can swim against, and shallow depths. The site is abundant with catfish, various perch, tilapia, and largemouth bass. Because of the vacationers who tube the river, you can often find little goodies such as sunglasses or other dropped items.

The best attraction is the stretch of bottom which has quartz lined with silver ore, giving it a marble-like appearance. This stretch of beauty is approximately ten feet wide and twenty yards long and is located about half way through the dive. I’ve been told on a night dive you can place your dive light on it and it will glow.

The site stays busy during the summer and the best time to dive would be either early (before 10 AM) or late (after 5 PM). Fall, Winter, and Spring (weekdays) offer more secluded diving.

If you access the site from Garner Park, be sure to arrange to be picked up or have a vehicle parked at Magers’ Crossing on CR 350.
