SportDivers Planets 50 Greatest Dives, #7, For many divers, Cozumel is like an old friend, one they visit every year. Part of the enormous Palancar reef system, Palancar Horseshoe remains a perennial favorite — and why not? Dense, colorful corals cover the structure, and divers drop directly into the large, horseshoe-shaped amphitheater from which the site gets its name, greeting the resident green moray eel along the way. Depending on the current — sometimes strong — dives can also begin farther south. Drift north with the current, exploring the dense, rocky formation’s tunnels and crevices in around 80 feet, among the schools of blue tangs, jacks, parrotfish and turtles that call them home. — RS

Horseshoe at Palancar Reef
This was a Wall Dive, and a drift dive. There was a strong current, and lots of swim throughs. The swim throughs were kind of like canyons going through the reef. There were big lobsters hiding in the walls. There was so much to see and it was impressive. I could dive that site every day for a week and still not have seen everything that there was to see.
