Millbrook Quarry (aka Lake Millbrook) - Haymarket VA

Loading...
Millbrook Quarry (aka Lake Millbrook) is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located at Lat/Long: 38.8234,-77.704, Haymarket, VA 20143. This dive site has an average rating of 2.91 out of 5 from 46 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 91-100ft/28-30m. The average visibility is 11-15ft/3-5m. Training platforms are available.

As of March 2020 Millbrook Quarry is closed and no longer leased by Coral Edge Adventures. Lake Phoenix is in discussion with property owner to reopen but nothing has been formalized.

Millbrook Quarry is located about 5 miles off of exit 40 on I-66 in Haymarket, Virginia. It is about ten minutes from Manassas, and about 30 minutes from Washington, DC .

Lake Millbrook currently has three entrance areas or "beaches". The near-surface platform at Beach 1 has been removed and replaced by crushed rock laid out from the beach entrance and graduated/sloped into the water for several feet.

The "beaches" have been renamed as follows:
Beach 1 is Sunset Beach.
Beach 2 1/2 is Adventure Wall.
Beach 3 is Omaha Beach. NOTE: Omaha Beach will not be useable until July 2017.

There are multiple underwater training platforms situated at 30’, and are connected to large surface buoys that are clearly visible and accessible. Numerous objects have been submerged and serve as attractions to enjoy and explore. For example, you’ll find an airplane at 70’, a Winnebago at 80’, and several sunken boats and cars. The granite walls surrounding parts of the quarry provide spectacular underwater drop offs and visually stunning rock formations.

Amenities include a couple of Porta-Johns onsite, and a changing shed.

Bass, bluegill, and catfish make up the fish population, and they can be seen when the visibility allows. Crayfish have also been observed near the "swamp" area (south end of the quarry). Several years ago, the State of Virginia killed off the invasive zebra mussel population. Up until recently, the visibility has been poor, but it is improving. It ranges between 5’ to 25’ from the surface to about 30’, depending on weather and season of the year. As you descend past 30’, viz often increases while temps drop dramatically due to a thermocline, ranging in the low to mid-forties year round. During the summer months, the first 20 or 30 feet from the surface warm up to about 65 °F.

Had a good BuddyDive day with Coral Edge Adventures, and with a nice warm fire at the end to warm up.

Visibility has been good the last few weekends around 25 ft yesterday @ 85ft.
dpan - 8/24/2019 2:22 PM
Visibility was good today. Could almost see the 30ft deep platform from the surface.

We dove there today. Dove to 85ft and over to see a plane @ 65 ft. Visibility was around 15ft

It’s like diving in cold milk

looking to practice buoyancy and propulsion techniques in the coming weekends if anyone needs a dive buddy.

Also, are there any GUE divers here?
dpan - 7/01/2019 1:12 PM
Well I definitely need some bouyancy and finning practice as I recently completed the TDI Intro to Tech class. Let me know what weekends you are diving. I can dive either Saturday or Sunday and the earlier the better...it opens @ 8 am. I’m not part of GUE but it sounds interesting.

Did your get your dive gear?

Went diving today. Finished Into to Tech class. I’m looking for weekend dive buddy’s. The quarry opens at 8am so you can dive and be back before the family is out of bed.

I went scuba diving here on 6/1/2019.
Doing Into to Tech class with Coral Edge Adventures. I live in Manassas so Millbrook Quarry is a great place to get in an early morning dive and spend the rest of the day with family.

My dive buddy, David, and I have been diving Millbrook consistently even during the past winter season. Last Sunday (5/7) we practiced using two lift bags to transport a 5’x5’ metal mesh platform. We eventually got the platform to level out at neutral buoyancy and were able to move it several feet with ease.

The visibility wasn’t bad from the surface to 25’, but cleared up a lot between there and the 60’ mark.

Had two great dives, while doing something a little out of the ordinary.

Buddied up with David Sliom on Sunday (6/5) for two dives. During the first, I inadvertently opened my eyes while removing and replacing my mask as I kneeled on top of a submerged platform. The disturbed mucky silt went everywhere, including my optics. The next day I developed severe conjunctivitis. I’ve opened my eyes before while removing/replacing my mask at the deeper and colder levels there without a problem.
Aside from that unfortunate incident, the dives went very well.

Checked out Millbrook again yesterday (April 30). I was expecting to be joined by a new diver I met on Divebuddy. He wasn’t able to make it, so I did a solo. Was pretty cold at 90’ (42f) where I spent most of the time using my torch in pitch black conditions. When the dive was nearly over and began my ascent, I saw the plane near the north park of the lake.

I went scuba diving here on 4/10/2016. Average viz: 5-10ft/2-3m. Water temp: Under 50°F/10°C.
Did a solo dive at Millbrook. Practiced navigation and found a boat at 80’. Viz was between 5’-10’; ambient temp was 49, and 45 in the water. CEA personnel were there moving platforms around.
1982shawn - 5/01/2016 4:19 PM
Do you have a way to locate the boat?
Airworks - 5/01/2016 4:24 PM
I created and have been using a fairly detailed and updated dive map. Offered it to Coral Edge Adventures so it could replace the old one that’s been around since 2003, but they haven’t changed it. I’ll be glad to email you a copy. Just email me at alrios80@msn.com and I’ll send you one.

Dove here several times while it was under The Dive Shop’s management, and only once since Coral Edge Adventures became the new operators.

On that particular day, the viz was pretty bad; around 2’. The new managers are working hard to improve the grounds and underwater visibility, so I’m looking forward to seeing a dramatic change around summertime.

was closed, open again under new management, Coral Edge Adventures dive shop of Catharpin, VA. See coraledgeadventures.com/Millbrook_Quarry.php

been diving here many times, 2009-2010 and 2014-2015. as quarries go, this one is above average. viz varies widely based on season and weather, best I’ve seen is 30 feet. temperature is generally cool to cold. some fish, lots of artifacts (eg, boats, cars, one plane) and great rock formations. posted a map in the pictures - combination of several maps I’ve seen online, some personal experience, and a 2009 survey. entry fee is $30 at the gate or $25 at The Dive Shop, Fairfax, VA (thediveshop-va.com/)

The quarry can be quite cold and visibility is low, but that is great for training for not so perfect situations.

I went scuba diving here on 6/1/2013. Average viz: 5-10ft/2-3m. Water temp: 50-55°F/10-13°C.
Cold and Murky; good dives in that I verified new regs and computer are in working order.
