Lake Denton

is a 66-acre lake in Highlands County in the U.S. state of Florida. It is between the cities of Avon Park and Sebring. Its maximum depth is 51 feet. Divers use the lake for recreation and training. The Orange Blossom Baptist Camp is located on its shore.

Lake Denton has a public boat ramp, but no public swimming areas. In recent years, a conflict has arisen between those wanting to use the lake for boating and those wanting to use it for swimming. In summer 2005, the boat ramp was officially closed, temporarily, so people could use Lake Denton for swimming. The future will determine whether boating and swimming will both be allowed, depending on how the Highlands County Commission decides to respond to conflicts

Lake Denton is reopened for divers and boaters except that you must park across the street, which they designated as parking. This is a great place to do Open Water, Navigation, and Rescue courses. The lake is a great place to try out new gear. If everyone keeps the area clean the lake will stay open. The lake goers are on probation to see if they can keep it clean. There are 2 portolets and a dumpster for everyone’s use. Please keep the area clean. To get there take rt. 27 south (if you are coming from Lake Wales area) and go about 30 miles to the town of Avon Park. A mile or so through town you will see South Florida Community College on the left. Make a left at that light. Take this road to the end and make a right. Go about 2/10ths of a mile and make a left onto Lake Denton rd. Follow around the bend and the entrance is on the right. You can pull in to unload but remember you can not park on the dirt road to the lake...You will get towed.

Water was warm enough for me in a 3mm full suit, hood and gloves, buddy was in shorts and a t-shirt for hour long dives. There are marked lines leading all over. Some sunk boats, platforms, bicycles, statues, and fish to be seen. Depth didn’t get below 50’ for us following the lines. Water was nice but visibility was 15’-20’ mostly. It can silt up quickly. One member of your dive party must drag a dive flag float. Facilities are three porta-potties and two changing stalls that are nonworking showers and a few picnic tables. Parking is abundant. You fill out a waiver and pay $15 on the honor system into a lock box. It’s a great training location for open water divers in the Central Florida area.

euroconec - 9/30/2018 2:44 PM John and I did a practice dive here on Sunday Sept 30, 2018. Directions above work great. Very easy to find, plenty of parking. There are two changing booths, large bathrooms are a bit of a walk, look west about 150 ~ 200 feet. Very nice entry point of clean sand. a fer picnic tables and on weekends there is an easy up with dive instructors teaching classes. The water was very clear near the entry but as we got further out and deeper the viz went form 20’+ to 10’ than 5’ at best. Water was warm at the surface and comfortable at 51’. All I was wearing was a rash guard. Also, there is a liability form to sign (bring a pen) The fee is $15 per person
