Big Sandy Creek Swimming Hole - Leander TX

Loading...
Big Sandy Creek Swimming Hole is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located at 1800 Medina Vista Lane, Leander, TX 78641. This dive site has an average rating of 3.00 out of 5 from 2 scuba divers. The maximum depth is under 5ft/2m. The average visibility is under 5ft/2m.

Secret swimming hole (no scuba diving) on Big Sandy Creek near Jonestown, TX...only 10 minutes west of Cedar Park, TX. The sign says to swim at your own risk, there is no lifeguard on duty. This area is dry if rain hasn’t fallen in several weeks. But after a good rain, expect this spot to be pretty full. So check recent weather before you head out.

This area is not designated as a park on any map or website that I could find, but it is clearly maintained by someone...most likely the city of Jonestown or the surrounding neighborhood association. There is a small shady area with very large oak trees (which the kids may like to climb)...and one picnic table and trash can. No bathrooms or drinking water.

There is a one lane bridge that the water flows over when the water level is high. On the north side of the bridge, the water is pretty clear and is around 3-4 feet deep in most spots. Several large, submerged rocks can be seen when you look out over the surface of the water. A few fish and lots of minnows can be spotted. On the south side of the bridge, the water is pretty clear and ranges from 1-2 feet...which makes a great spot to sit or float and relax in the cool water. The bottom on either side can get kicked up easily which ruins the visibility.

The bottom is pretty rocky so wear water shoes to protect your feet. And it’s a natural swimming hole, so don’t be surprised if you see turtles or water snakes. But remember, they are more afraid of you than you are of them :)

This is not a big swimming hole, but the water cool and deep in some spots. If you have your fishing license, you can probably catch a sunfish or perch pretty easily.

Not alot of water for diving but it’s a nice place to cool off if the area has had rain!

After two weeks without any rain...this swimming hole has mostly dried up. There was a small pool of water with lots of minnows, my daughter and I saved 14 of them by moving them to a deeper, bigger pool of water. This area is definitely only a swimming hole if it rains.

Good swimming hole to relax and get wet. I saw lots of minnows and some other small fish. The water was cool and flowed slowly over the bridge. Nice shady picnic area.
