Schildberg (Atlantic) Quarry - Atlantic IA

Loading...
Schildberg (Atlantic) Quarry is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located in Atlantic, IA 50022. This dive site has an average rating of 3.14 out of 5 from 7 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 91-100ft/28-30m. The average visibility is 16-20ft/5-6m.

The Atlantic quarry’s are a great get wet place here in Iowa. Many dive shops, and public safety dive teams use these for training and certification dives. Vis can be great during about anytime in the year, after storms it is usually reduced down to a few feet. Average Vis would be around 10-20 feet depending on the day. The fish here are extremely friendly, some divers take frozen corn down with them to and feed the fish. There is a great rock wall on the south side that is great for diving and full of life. The max depth we have hit was 94 feet and is extremely cold even in summer. Entry is just off the highway threw the construction lot. Many divers use this spot so you never know who you might meet. If anyone wants a dive buddy to check it out txt Richard Christie 712-263-0428.

Great site for this area.
Viz can be 1 - 20 feet depending on the day.
I dive here Spring through Fall with the Landlocked Scuba Club,
( facebook.com/groups/249869188368749/ )
which is associated with DiVentures in Omaha.

Friendly fish and depths to 74 ft
The most fish action can be seen in water shallower than 18 ft.

I went scuba diving here on 9/8/2019.
Open water cert dives. Vis was 15ft. Thermocline at 20ft.

The "closure" noted a couple years ago was not aimed at divers. The fence was put up to combat vandalism of the equipment at the site. I have had recent conversation with the owner and now the water is available and the gate can be opened with just a phone call.

Seriously? Our scuba club would love to dive the Atlantic Quarry again. Would you mind messaging me to let me know who you spoke with?

Pretty good for midwest muck diving. Very friendly fish. Visibility is highly subject to recent rains and high winds. Have see anywhere from 2-25 feet.

Dove here several times with the Greater Omaha Scuba Club (GO Scuba - go-scuba.net/), 2011-2014. DiVentures (Omaha) and some Iowa dive shops use it for training. Viz is mediocre, 10-20 feet on a good day. Entry is a sand and stone ramp. Go to the left and you’re in 3-12’ and lots of lake weed, gradually slopes down to the bottom - reportedly 90’, friend of mine got down to 80’. To the right is a rock wall that runs halfway around the quarry. Sharp thermocline, very dark below 30’. Lots of small fish - beggars, many divers feed them. Some big fish, but they avoid divers.

As of this season, the quarry has been closed to the public, and fenced off. It may be possible to dive by permission on a case-by-case basis by contacting its owner.

Sadly it appears scuba diving is no longer allowed at the Atlantic Quarry. I was there last week. There is a locked gate at the entrance along with signs saying "These Gates Close Daily at 4:30PM", "Danger No Trespassing" and "Rock Quarries are not Playgrounds - Stay Out - Stay Alive - Iowa Limestone Producers Association."

Yes, I was there also in April and saw the locked gate. We parked and walked to get a dive in, but I don’t recommend it. I think the owner has finally fallen to the "liability panic" that is steadily taking away our good diving spots. :/

Many fish that aren’t shy (mostly bluegills, bass, some crappie, and I think I even saw perch?) I’m sure there are catfish in the quarry - I just haven’t seen any. On the south side there’s a nice rock reef / wall where plenty of fish like to hang out and depths range from 6’ to 30’. Toward the middle, it’s pretty bleak and I’ve found depths reaching 70’, but there’s nothing to see past 50 as the silt blacks it out. At the bottom, silt is like pudding so be careful if you venture into the deep because it can be VERY disorientating, even for experienced divers. As always, dive to your level of comfort and training.

I’ve only done two dives here in 2013, but plan on making many more this coming summer. Visibility was pretty good, for Iowa’s murky watershed. (pegged about 20’ at best; 0’ at worst)

Able to drive vehicle right up to waters edge, makes for great entry. Nice shallow enterance into quarry. On south side is a great walk wall for diving. This fish are extreamly friendly and love to be fed by had with frozen corn. Deepets we have hit has been 94 feet. Suppose to be some old equipment at the bottom somewhere in a ditch right in the middel, we have yet to find it. Lots of local divers use this for fun diving, you never know who you will meet there.
