Wow, wow and absolutely amazing!
How else can I describe the two weeks that I’ve been diving on Wake Island. The diving is definitely world class. Big, unlimited depth wall diving is within shore diving distance around the island. There are 2 WWII era wrecks within a stone’s throw from shore in 30-50ft of water. The visibility is consistently 150ft plus. Boat diving gives you access to full on adrenaline pumping high speed drift dives. The island is fully stocked with fish; huge humphead parrotfish, napoleon wrasse, black tip sharks, grey reef sharks, loads of monster parrotfish, giant morays, eagle rays, lionfish, octopus, and reef fish everywhere you look. It is a diver’s dream destination. The only problem is that you have to have a business reason to travel to Wake; even active duty military cannot visit without a mission on the island.
I have MWR and Capt Vinh Trinh, Wake Island commander, to thank for the chance to visit the island and certify 16 Open Water Students, 3 Advanced Open Water students and a Rescue Diver.
The island has only 200 residents, only about 25 active divers and one fishing boat. Spear fishing is not allowed and there is no development to create runoff. The fishing is incredible as well. You don’t have to worry about getting fish, just getting them into the boat before the healthy shark population beats you to them.
Here’s the link to 100 or so of the shots that I got. Incredible place!
