Fleetwing Schooner - Ellison Bay WI

Loading...
Fleetwing Schooner is a shore accessible fresh water dive site, located in Ellison Bay, WI. This dive site has an average rating of 2.50 out of 5 from 2 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 21-25ft/6-8m. The average visibility is 31-35ft/9-11m.

This is a shallow wreck that ran aground in September, 1888. She was a 136’ wooden schooner carrying grain, stone, and lumber. I’m short on time today but feel free to add info if anybody has any to share about this site!

I dove it from the shore in late June, 2012, and the water level was down a bit (6’-7’) so I really could’ve seen everything I needed to see just skin diving with a snorkel, but I hit a max depth of about 22’, so you will have nearly unlimited bottom time on this wreck if you so choose to dive it. The wreck is broken up pretty badly, and there is nothing to penetrate. Rock bass, crappies, bluegill, and smallmouth bass were in the area while I was diving. Not an impressive wreck, but a great way to kill a lazy morning or afternoon! :)

Dove this site on July 10, 2020. Had a storm overnight with rain and wind continuing into the morning, so visibility was pretty bad to start with (~4 ft). This improved to 15 ft several hours later. Water level was a few feet higher higher than normal. We found both sections of the wreck, but with difficulty due to low vis. If you take a 30 deg. bearing from the boat ramp in Garrett Bay and swim out about 120 yds, you should be on top if it. Saw many gobies, bass and bluegill as well. We dove with drysuits but could have gotten by with a 5mm suit since the water temp was 76 deg. Our max depth was 25 ft (away from the wreck) with avg depth of 16 ft. Although we had poor conditions, I added a star because this would normally be an easy dive for relative beginners (such as us).

Easy shore dive, shallow enough to snorkel.
