Buddy’s Reef
Truly one of the island’s best house reefs, Buddy’s Reef offers a bit of everything. After a giant stride entry from the dock, make the easy 30-foot (9 meters) swim to the drop-off. Here the terrain will follow a 45-degree angled slope, filled with hard corals and some soft gorgonians, bottoming out at 130 feet (40 meters). Many times seahorses and frog-fish make this reef their home. Be sure to ask the dive guides at Buddy Dive for their locations.

Buddy Dive Resort
77 hotel rooms, studios, one-, two and threebedroom apartments offer comfort and privacy. All apartments have fully equipped kitchens complete with stove, microwave, and refrigerator, while the living rooms are comfortably furnished with cable TV, phones, and fan. You will have direct access to your own private balcony or porch with an astonishing view over the crystal blue ocean or lush tropical gardens.

Buddy Dive’s house reef can vary from very good to outstanding. Very easy access. The last time we were there the seawall (by the old Lion’s appartments) apparently had been scrubbed and was pretty much devoid of life. The trip prior to that the wall was covered with life including large schools ofsilver sides with several large Tarpon cruising through them. The tarpon wouldcruise toward us and turn off just out of reach. Likely they were both curious about us and using us to corral the silversides. On one dive (since the depth is less than 15 feet the dive exceeded an hour) I logged in excess of 50 different creatures spotted ranging from snook, tarpon, and bonefish to nudibrachs, shrimp, octopus and blennies. My wife spotted a small octopus imitating vegetation over sand.

The reef itself is an very good dive during the day but the best times in my opinion are at night or just prior to dawn. On our last trip (Sept 2015) I did a night dive with a buddy I met at the resort. We spent about 1 hour at 30 to 40 feet. Probably for about half of that dive we were accompanied by one or more tarpon in the 4 to 5 foot size range. They would come from behind us and slowly swim past us on the side and out into the dark only to return and shadow us again. They would swim past us at a distance of 2 feet or less.

As for the predawn dives we would enter the water just as the horizon started to lighten and thus get to see the shift change just as the sun rises. The best encounter I have had with an octopus was during a pre-dawn dive. I got to spend about 10 to 15 min watching a fairly large octopus hunting the reef. As he hunted moving along the bottom "tenting" the coral and sand bottom he was accompanied by a graysbe, a snapper and a hind nuclear hunting. That is when species cooperate during the hunt.
