This site is named for the "Metridium giganteum" commonly known as the Giant White Plumed Anemone which is found in abundance here.
The Metridium Fields are located in Monterey Beach at the intersection of Cannery Row and Reeside Avenue. The fields are located about 200 yards offshore and were named for the giant white Metridium anemones which cover large portions of the rocks. Although it can be done, swimming to this area is difficult and boat traffic is a concern. For this reason, it is better to attempt to do this site as a boat dive. The northwest portion of this dive provides the largest amount of anemones. Octopuses and crabs are commonly found among the anemones. Bat rays, juvenile wolf eels, ocean sunfish, and bull seal lions can be seen at this location. The large amount of plankton that inhabits this area often makes visibility limited. Remember that it is easier to return to the beach underwater at this dive spot due to the kelp near the surface.

Most divers get a rush just swimming to this site. It can be hit or miss: Pelagics pass by regularly and you may get lucky. Seeing what is considered Monterey Bay’s best metridium stretch is a sure thing, but encounters with mola-molas, gray whales and other species can be a huge payoff.
