Spring Lake Shore "The Ayrshire" - Spring Lake NJ

Loading...
Spring Lake Shore "The Ayrshire" is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located at 400 feet offshore, Spring Lake, NJ. The maximum depth is 26-30ft/8-9m. The average visibility is 5-10ft/2-3m.

A brig, Ayrshire, out of Scotland was wrecked Jan. 12, 1850 off the wild shores of Absecon Island. More than two hundred Irish and British immigrants were aboard the ship in search of the American Dream, and had it not been for Newell’s contraption they would have all gone to the bottom of the frigid Atlantic. A group of dedicated local fisherman carried a cannon-like device that fired a ball tethered to line that was then attached to the sinking vessel. A closed car was attached by a set of sturdy rings to the line, and over two days all but one of the passengers were saved.

Good news, Bad news. The good news, there is a wreck there. The bad news, Absecon Island is no where near Spring Lake, most reports have the Ayrshire (Aysrshire) wrecking off SeaSide which isn’t near Absecon either. Update, Sandy moved a lot of sand and crews placing a new sea wall may have found the Ayrshire under 20’ of sand on Normandy Beach. RayC
