Athens SCUBA Park - Athens TX

Loading...
Located in Athens, TX and was previously a clay quarry. Underwater, they have a C-140 airplane, a small airplane, DART bus, old motorcycles, numerous boats, a golf cart, a Volkswagen Beetle, and several other items underwater. The lake level varies between 24 and 35 feet deep, has amazing 70’ visibility due to being spring fed and having a high pH level (no algae growth), and has warmer water temps in the winter than most places. A full service dive shop (rentals, tank fills, etc.) is on the premises. They also offer instruction and training. Lake is closed to boats, jet skis, fishing, and any other sport that can cause harm to SCUBA divers using the park. Don’t forget your c-card !!!

Dove here 9/30/17. Vis was 10’ at best. The free map they give out is all wrong because they change out items and the lift bag classes also lift and move things around. Water temp was great at 82° and supposedly the vis was way better earlier in the week before it rained. But this is definitely a great way to practice navigation skills. Arrived at 9:30 and had the park to ourselves, very nice. Going back I’m 2-3 weeks to try it again.

I went scuba diving here on 7/22/2017. Average viz: 5-10ft/2-3m. Water temp: 76-80°F/24-27°C.
Did all of the sunken things and navigated perfectly without looking.
Then when I got out, found a nearby geocache.

Viz was poor which we were told at the office. Due to all the rain the past week. Temp: surface 83, 20 feet 78. Viz was 5 at best. We did have the place to ourselves for the most part, only saw 2 other divers the whole time.

It was fun diving the wrecks, but visibility was only about 10’. It was better the next morning when no one else was diving, maybe 15. Camping there was fun too, and the staff is super nice and helpful. Going there this next weekend for Halloween treasure hunt and night diving.

It was warm - thermocline at 17 feet. They hosted a treasure hunt but I had more fun diving with the new guy! fast learner.

it was after the epic storms that ripped through here, so viz was less than one foot because of all the clay silt stirred up by the storms and runoff. but once we got to about 17’, visibility increased to about 10’. no fish but those wrecks were fun! I want to come back next month when the water has cleared up a bit.

We just went to Athens Scuba Park last weekend. The water was warm, but the visibility was only about 5 to 10 feet. The park’s website showed a visibility of 20 feet. There are a lot items that are sunk; two planes, many boats, bus, etc... The staff were all very friendly. The park had a great wash station to clean your gear. We will likely revisit this park in the future.
