Chandler:

A Chandler police officer is putting down the gun for a day and picking up a tank of oxygen in hopes of helping the environment.

Sergeant Joe Favazzo is teaming up with the U.S. Forest Service for National Underwater Cleanup Day at Saguaro Lake.

Favazzo owns N Depth Scuba and is calling on all water enthusiasts to join him at Saguaro Lake to clean the murky waters of trash and debris.

Known as ’Project AWARE’, it’s the largest cleanup of its kind.

The event takes place September 20th at 8:00 a.m. and the public is invited to join the effort

Organizers are in need of scuba divers, snorkelers and any other volunteer who wants to get involved and remove trash in and around the lake.

In 2007 a total of 358,617 volunteers helped Project AWARE clean 34,560 miles of shoreline nationwide and remove seven million pounds of rubbish.
