Well, total time underwater in the pool was 20 minutes or so. The pool session lasted a couple of hours, but mostly on the surface.

Great article! How many students did the instructor have in total? Seems like he wasn’t paying much attention to Pedro. Also, did they really only have 20 mins of pool training or was Pedro being sarcastic?

The panic scenario you mentioned is spot on...mask off, bolting to surface. Panicked divers want everything off and they want out of the water. That usually means they spit out their reg, rip off their mask, and bolt for the surface.
